Shalom!

So ... What's New ?

Welcome to the TIG Newsletter - A monthly e-zine about Northern Israel and all that's new at this-is-galilee.com (TIG).

ENCOUNTERING ISRAEL

Last month, I found out that an ex-colleague of mine from the publishing world has published his own book about touring Israel. As I'm always on the lookout for useful resources to recommend, I immediately contacted Stephen J. Kramer - known to me as Steve - to find out more.

Steve's book, Encountering Israel is a collection of articles that he has written for the Jewish Times of South Jersey. The result is an insider view of some of the most interesting spots in Israel. He also gives a background of the history and geography of the areas he visits.

I loved his description of a day trip to Tel Megiddo, a fascinating historical site in the Lower Galilee. With his permission, I have published an extract from his book on my new Tel Megiddo page.

Here's a bit of trivia you might not know ... Armageddon is a corruption of the words har (Hebrew for Mountain) and Megiddon (Aramaic for Megiddo) and it's believed that this is where the final battle between good and evil will take place!

If you enjoyed the extract from Encountering Israel fill in the form at the bottom of the page for more details and how to order a copy of the book.

A TRIP TO THE HERMON SKI PARK

Last month's newsletter fell on the first day of the skiing season at the Hermon Ski Park. I was there on Wednesday, and here's a picture to prove it!

It's a long time since there has been so much snow and every Saturday, the roads are jammed with visitors going to and from the Ski Park. But this weekend will be different. Hermon Ski Park will be closed ... because snow storms are on their way!

Neve Ativ is the place to stay if you want to visit the Hermon and it's the closest thing we've got to a ski village. There's a ski shop where you can hire all your equipment and buy your ski pass and a choice of country lodgings where you can get an all-inclusive deal.

On the way back, you pass by Nimrod Fortress. Before you get there, you have an amazing view of it from above and you can see how it covers the whole of the mountain top! Further down the mountain, it's worth stopping at Sa'ar Falls which are beautiful at this time of the year.
